Jan Parkinson
Managing Director
Local Government Employers
What made you choose the public sector and how did you get to your current role?
It chose me really! I worked for two years in the private sector in Paris for two years. I returned to the UK to do an MBA and then applied for what looked like a really interesting job in the NHS as a Management and Organisation Development adviser - essentially supporting NHS organisations through major change. After 6 years in the NHS I then applied to work for Gateshead Council as Deputy Director of HR. A year after that I was appointed Strategic Director and remained with the Council for 10 years.
What does your job involve?
My current job is a national role in local government. My organisation negotiates pay deals on behalf of councils and other public sector employers covering over 2.2 million employees. We provide advice and guidance on pay, pensions and other employment issues. We also represent the views of councils and others in discussions with central government.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy the variety, challenge and complexity of my job - no two days are ever the same.
What has been your greatest achievement within your career?
There have been many achievements in my career of which I am proud though I suppose being appointed to my current job is the best so far.
What are your aspirations for the future?
I've only been in my current role for 18 months so feel I've a lot to achieve here before thinking about the next move. I've no definite career plan at the moment but I am certain I will remain in the public sector.
What advice would you give to those interested in a management or executive career within the public sector?
My advice to anyone thinking about a career in the public sector would be 'do it'. It really is the most rewarding, challenging and exciting place to be and gives you a real sense of satisfaction knowing that you can make a difference.
