Gillian Hibberd
Corporate Director (People and Policy)
Buckinghamshire County Council

What made you choose the public sector?
I was first attracted to the public sector for the great training opportunities that were available to me as a Trainee Personnel Officer

How did you get to your current role?
My first job was as a Store Personnel Manager in retail.  I moved to a trainee Personnel Officer role at Oldham Council and was promoted through to Principal Personnel Manager.  Following that I have held a number of HR roles at Dacorum BC, London Borough of Hackney and Hertfordshire County Council before joining Buckinghamshire in 2005.

What does your job involve?
I am a member of the corporate management team for the Council and am responsible for HR, organisation development, policy, performance and partnerships across the organisation.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
I love the variety.  No two days are the same.  I also get to meet a wide range of people across the organisation and outside the organisation.  Most of all I enjoy the fact that what we do changes peoples lives for the better.

What has been your greatest achievement within your career?
My greatest achievement has been in building teams that are ambitious and at the top of their game.  I cant achieve anything without a strong team around me so I always focus on getting the right people into the right jobs.

What are your aspirations for the future?
I want to see Buckinghamshire go from strength to strength and for the County to be known as one of the most prosperous, healthy and  enjoyable places to live in the Country.

What advice would you give to those interested in a management or executive career within the public sector?
If you are serious about a career in the public sector then don't treat the recruitment process lightly.  Find out as much as you can about the organisations you are interested in and the place it serves.  Once in the public sector you will never look back!
